Mise-En-Scene
Costume- I intend to have the glisian queen wearing an ethereal type dress and the glisian king shall have tattoos that symbolize the stories of the long-lived planet this should convey the differences between humans and glisians. I also intend to have the kidnapper to wear dark clothes so as to show the evilness of his character.

Props- I created a makeshift baby sized space ship out of an old chicken feeder and part of an old car engine along with some tubes to make it looks as though all of the new technology has already been destroyed and the last of the technology on the planet was old and run down so they were at their last resorts.

Setting- I will film the glisian scene in the middle of an old field that has been burned down to create an effect of destruction and dismay. I will film the kidnapper scene in a forest pathway possibly near the canal to show that it is a very familiar place to many people who watch the show and will give a sense of familiarity.

Lighting- During editing, I intend to play around with the lighting making the glisian scene darker along with the kidnapper scene and I will make the explanation scene lighter along with the best friend scene to display the contrast between the emotions of the scenes.

End of Year 1 exam: Learner response

Total = 51   Grade = 6

WWW- You've clearly engaged with the issues and debates in media, particularly in Q9. Good use of theory too!

LR

Q.1) 1/1
Q.2) 1/1
Q.3) 5/12
Q.4) 5/8
Q.5) 6/12
Q.6) 2/2
Q.7) 3/6
Q.8) 2/2
Q.9) 14/20
Q.10) 12/20

Q9-5
Q10-4

Q9)Lara Croft showcases conventional hero features such as skill, intelligence and courage; she also takes the traditionally male role as 'hero' and wears necessary equipment for action such a a utility belt. However, she is feminine in appearance and reinforces the commonly used female stereotype of being thin and attractive. She is often sexualised by er figure and he skimp clothing she used to wear. On the other hand, one could argue that she is empowering for women as she shows that women can do most anything that man can do.

Video game case study feedback and LR

WWW: Two very good case studies – as ever it’s a pleasure to mark your work! It’s clear to see you’ve understood the key components of each game and also linked it to the four key concepts. For these CSPs we could get a question related to any of those concepts so it’s vital we have a strong knowledge and understanding across the board.

EBI: I think the key question now is how we move from a solid grade 5 or 6 up to the top band of 7+. There are two things that will help you to do this: firstly, some questions are answered in a single sentence. Often this is appropriate but on other questions you could write more. Ultimately, it’s the depth and analysis in your exam answers that will take you to the higher grades. Secondly, I really think you should be taking on the grade 8/9 extension tasks. I appreciate you have other subjects and demands on your time but these links and questions are exactly what you need to be doing if you want to get the top grade you are capable of.

LR: Go back to both case studies and take on at least one of the extension tasks for each. Post links to the updated blogposts in your LR blogpost once this is complete.

Lara Croft Go:
Does Lara Croft Go target a female audience? Why do you think female gamers dominate the phone/tablet market?
I believe that the main target audience for this game is women as even though the number of female gamers have increased this is only due to the fact that many video games now-a-days are dominated by games you can play on a portable device and this is because most women are only interested in quick easy games you can play on the go.

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood:
Read this Guardian article on a Kardashian controversy regarding promoting products on Instagram. Why do some people regard Kardashian as a "toxic influence"?
Kim Kardashian is believed to be a "toxic influence" as even though she has many young female fans she continuously promotes anti self confident products such as appetite suppressors which are extremely out-dated.

Online, social and participatory media case study 3: Zoella

Language
1) Zoella is a beauty Youtuber with 12,089,211 subscribers.

2) Media convergence is the merging of mass communication outlets-print, television, radio, the Internet along with portable and interactive technologies through various digital media platforms.

3) Testing Weird Beauty Products With Mark | Zoella
Best Friend Does My ASOS Shop | Zoella
The Biggest Primark Haul I've Ever Done | Zoella
My Everyday Makeup Routine | Zoella
How To: 4 Quick & Easy Hairstyles | Zoella ad

4)costume
   lighting
   actor
   make up and props
   color scheme
   setting
   on screen writing

5) Zoellas use of makeup and costume allow her to appeal to younger teen audiences as she accessorizes and dresses like them which makes her seem relatable.

Industries
1) she makes money through pre-roll ads and through her merchandise such as books and beauty lines.

2) Social Media Influencer is a user on social media who have established credibility in a specific industry. A social media influencer has access to a large audience and can persuade others by virtue of their authenticity and reach. This applies to Zoella as she has a hefty follower count on as forms of social media.

3) Many producers may want to put their products in her videos she is mainly followed by teens who are hard to reach out to with ads and this is the main way they can be advertised to.

4) By collaborating with other big YouTubers both YouTubers gain subscribers from each other.

5) Zoella has moved onto more traditional media forms as over the past few years she has appeared on TV shows and magazine covers and written a book.

Audience
1) The target audience for Zoella's videos are girls from the age 11-18.

2) She often uses direct language when filming often creating an involved experience for the audience.

3) Information
    Diversion
    relationships
    Identity

4) Preferred (people who love Zoella): Zoella is a down-to-earth, inspirational beauty guru
Oppositional (people who hate Zoella): Zoella is a popularity craving liar who uses ghostwriters

5) Zoella has been criticised by many about the fact that she uses a ghostwriter on her books but lied about it and made videos suggesting she was writing it herself.

Representation
1) While Zoella makes many videos on anxiety and self-image I believe most of Zoellas videos are very appearance based and one may argue that this makes young girls feel bad about their looks.

2) Zoella represents women as appearance loving people this reinforces stereotypes however she also created her own success without a man's help and this subverts stereotypes.

3) I believe that a self-made celebrity is more positive as it was chosen by audiences rather than companies and Zoella represents herself as a more down to earth celebrity.

4) I believe that at first Zoella started off showing her real self but as time progressed and she gained popularity Zoella became a self-constructed image of what her fans wanted her to be.

5) Zoella may be criticized by being called fake

Coursework: Preliminary exercise

I plan to make a short Science Fiction television scene set in a school. I will use a variety of camera shots including close-ups, long shots and medium shots . I will also use a high angle shot to show where my character is.
I will attempt to subvert the representation of young people in my TV scene. Usually, young people are shown to be anti-social, irresponsible and naive. Instead, I will make my character a an evil duplicate who has killed their real self.
The people who will be in my film are myself and Karan.

- A high angle shot of the hills where one of the characters are
- A long shot to show one character moving down the corridor
- A long shot to show one character opening the door
- A medium shot to show the phone being picked up
- A close up to show someone talking on the phone
- A close up to show their facial expression change

I will film in the 2nd floor corridor and stairwell and I will film on the hills.

*Walks toward the window and answers phone*
Lola: "hello?"
*Karan stands up on the hills*
Karan:"You need to leave!"
Lola:" I'm fine don't worry i'm going back in"
Karan:"They're gonna find out Lola you're in danger!"
Lola:" They wont find out i'm positive"
Karan:"why?"
Lola: "because the real Lola is dead!"
*Karan is shocked*

Videogames case study 2: Kim Kardashian Hollywood

Language
1) The objective when playing this game is to get as much popularity as humanly possible and to gain as many followers as you can.

2) An A-list celebrity is a celebrity who has the highest amount of popularity and this is important for the game as it is the main goal you are trying to achieve.

3) To download this game you have to go to an app store and download it on a phone or tablet.

4) The story line of the game is that a person working in a salon in Harlem is noticed by Kim Kardashian and starts to climb the social ladder.

5) Many characters appear in the game such as Kim Kardashian Kylie Jenner and Kendell Jenner however you get to play as a customised character that you create yourself.

Audience
1) I believe that the main target audience for this game is a girl between the ages of 12-19 this is because the game is very fashion and popularity based and those things seem to matter to children of these ages.

2) Diversion, relationships, education. This is because it is an entertainment based game were you in some way build a sort of relationship with Kim Kardashian herself as she guides you through the game. However, from playing this game myself i believe this could be educational as it gives you an incite on the everyday lives of celebrities.

3) This game is addictive as it is constantly coming out with new concepts and products.

4) Because Kim has such a large brand and because the publisher has a very large network of consumers who play their games, the game became successful.

5) People continue to play this game as it never breaks emergence.

Representation
1) In this game women are represented as extremely feminine popularity crazed fashionistas who only care about climbing the ladder and becoming socialites.

2) In this game ethnicity, sexuality and race are represented as diverse as you can be any ethnicity or sexuality you wish.

3) While subverting female stereotypes and showcasing women as successful business women, this game also reinforces many female stereotypes such as that women fashion crazed and only care about popularity.

4) The game implies that all you have to do to become famous is to know famous people, start online feuds and date.

5) This game somewhat implies that celebrities only care about money and basically do nothing to gain it, this can be criticised as much of this statement is incorrect as most celebrities work extremely hard to get where they are today.

Industries
1) Kim has a net worth of about $175 million.

2) This game makes money through in app purchases such as private planes and extra energy or advertisements.

3) i believe you can buy a subscription to be a vip of some kind.

4) Kim K herself worked to create both TV and online video ads for the game.

5) This game uses convergence when it was advertised in the show 'Keeping up with the Kardashians' and as Kim herself advertised it on her social media as well as the game promoting her beauty line too.

Videogames case study 1: Lara Croft Go blog tasks

Language
1) Lara Croft is a female protagonist adventurer who first appeared in the Tomb Raider series starting in 1996.

2) The series Indiana Jones was a heavy influence on the creation of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft.

3) Lara Croft and Tomb Raider has moved beyond video games as it has now been turned into 2 different movies.

4) You can now play Lara Croft Go on Android and Apple devices.

5) Lara Croft Go is a turn-based puzzle video game in the Tomb Raider series.

6) Lara Croft Go uses narrative by creating 3 main levels with sub levels with the design of a map to lead you through the sub levels as the story line.

7) The iconography that can be found is the dusty sort of nature like colour scheme and images of jungle/animals that allow the game to seem adventurous and Lara Croft to seem like an explorer. This helps as the game is adventure based.

8) Apart from Lara Croft the other characters in the game are snakes, spiders, lizards and the queen of venom.

9) In Lara Croft Go the setting is basically just a temple in the jungle. Compared to other Lara Croft games this is very similar as it features abandoned temples and jungles much like other Tomb Raider and Lara Croft games.

10) Essentially Lara Croft started off as an adventurous female protagonist however she was dressed in a somewhat sexualised outfit and had an extremely unrealistic body shape which is a bad representation of women. Over time Lara Croft has evolved in that her body type is now much more realistic and her outfit is not as bad.

Representation
1) Usually in video games women are represented as side characters, prizes and/or maidens in distress.

2) Lara Croft reinforces female stereotypes in the media with the way she is dressed and her body type. This is because her body is an extremely unrealistic shape and her clothes are lacking which may cause her to be sexualised.

3) Lara Croft also subverts female stereotypes in the media. This is because she is the first female protagonist and her powerful, adventurous ways are generally seen as masculine however she shows that both men and women can be strong.

4) Some people believe that the video game industry is sexist and needs to change because of the overly sexualised way they portray women as side characters and prizes in skimpy outfits.

5) Although you can argue that Lara Croft is just another objectified woman designed to appeal to a male audience because of her unrealistic body shape and sexualised outfit, I believe that Lara Croft can also be used as empowering female icon as she has broken all of the boundaries surrounding female characters in video games and the longest standing prejudice against male protagonists and female protagonists.

Industries
1) PEGI stands for Pan European Game Information.

2) PEGI's job is to enforce the video game rating system of which they also created to help European customers to make informed decisions when buying a game.

3) Square Enix Montreal

4) The 2 popular video game franchises that were combined to make Lara Croft Go were Tomb Raider and Hit Man Go.

5) Another thing that is a part of the Tomb Raider/Lara Croft franchise is the 2 movies that have come out about the game.

Audience
1) Audiences may enjoy playing Lara Croft Go because it can given them nostalgia and is an interactive game which people enjoy. Also this game is set

2) Audiences can play Lara Croft Go when waiting for public transport/commuting or just at home.

3) When designing Lara Croft Go people at square enix  looked at the settings of both the Tomb Raider video games and the Indiana Jones movies for inspiration.

4) Diversion, relationships

5) The target audience for Lara Croft Go is possibly older women around the age 20-35 as this brings nostalgia to the 90s video game Tomb Raider.

Magazines and advertising assessment: Learner response

total=22         grade=6

WWW- A really impressive assessment, well done! You clearly know your stuff - good revision with specific reference to the texts. With a few minor changes you should be on a 7+ grade.

EBI- Paragraphs! Organising your longer answers is essential for the top levels.

      - Written English: cut out basic errors
(e.g they're/their)
-Revise stereotypes in NHS Represent advert
(e.g. men, disabled)

LR- See blog

6) 8

Magazine conventions
Title of publication
Slogan
Central image
Name checks
Direct address

4) The quotes from reality television stars use controversy (‘sex’ and ‘jail’
and ‘stalker’) to hint at the exciting stories inside.

Use of paparazzi shots rather than posed shots which make the reader
feel as if they are seeing a different side to celebrities and this reinforces
the dramatic coverlines.

The magazine uses a strong, central image with the face in the visual
centre of the cover to draw the reader’s eye. The image uses a model
making direct eye contact with the reader which gives them a
connection. The hair-style is messy which could connote a night out, or
be used to make the model more edgy which links to the idea of ‘new
posh’ and ‘21 st century’. Her costume includes pearls and jewellery which
connotes wealth and luxury and status. This is complemented by the
gold brocade of her outfit which is reminiscent of royalty.

The use of sans serif font for the cover lines, together with brackets
(‘yes, really) gives the magazine cover a friendly, more informal tone,
although words such as ‘Aristo’ and ‘Sloane’ are specific to the target
audience demographic.

5)A disabled athlete – wheelchair basketball player and TV presenter Ade
Adepitan people usually do not see disabled people as athletic.

Black, female CEO of MOBO – Kanya King usually it is older white males who dominate the industries.

Female boxer – Olympic medal winner Nicola Adams women are not usually seen as strong however she fights for a living.

6) In the 1950s the representation of women consisted of women only being housewives and being reliant on men. This also showed women as enjoying housework and cooking, however pictured them as not being very good and needing the help on male dominant products. The OMO anchorage text is extremely belittling toward women and talks down to them as though they were children.with the repetitive use of exclamation marks and italics (such as "Yes, brilliantly bright!" ). The OMO concept of "bright" and "white" reinforces the stereotype of women being pure and innocent.

Although it is also based in the 1950s, the Galaxy advert shows the more glamorous celebrity side of the 1950s while still showcasing a 'damsel in distress' concept - Propps 'heroine' in need of a male saviour. However, the 1950s nostalgia is taken aback by the subversion of female stereotypes throughout the advert. When she takes her original bus driver's hat she goes from 'damsel in distress' to a strong independent woman with a personal driver (who just so happens to be male). The representation of women in this advert is much more reflective of the modern stereotypes of women taking control rather than the 1950s stereotypes and differs vastly from the OMO stereotypes.

NHS Represent advert displays how female stereotypes have changed: led by a strong female rapper the advert then goes on to showcase Black and Asian women boxing, leading companies and in science labs. women are shown as independent, powerful physically and mentally and academically capable for powerful positions in terms of business. By specifically using language in the lyrics to empower the BAME community (‘You could be a pilot…we are the ones making policies’), this lifts the aspiration of black and Asian women.

Videogames: An introduction

1)The first video games had very bad graphics and they were only button pressing games on old computers.

2)Over time the graphics in video games have become better and they are now a lot more interactive and have actual stories and context.

3)All of the most successful games have context, stories and are mostly interactive although there is also quite a lot of interest in death. They also have amazing narratives.

4)Adults accuse video games of persuading young kids to commit violence and crimes as they have seen in games. However, this is entirely incorrect in my opinion as many people who play video games have no urge to suddenly commit crimes and violence.

5) Fortnite is an online game where around 100 players jump out of a plane on to a small island and then fight each other until only one is left. Players can find various different weapons around the island to use to fight with including: crossbows, rifles and grenade launchers.

6)There are more than 4oM players worldwide.

7) Fortnite is popular because it is quite unique in terms of narrative and because it is very interactive.

8)"
56
A fantastic game for all the family. The violence is cartoon-like, not gratuitous or graphic. I limit my children to only playing the Playstation at the weekends. Simple." I disagree with this comment as i do not believe that it is a game that all the family will enjoy as not all adults would agree with the violence or context of the game.
1

If kids are influenced to act violently all they have to do is watch WW2 on the History Channel, learn about King Henry VIII's wives or just watch the news." I agree with this comment as i believe that adults often misconstrue the idea of influenced violence as not many teens suddenly believe they should fight because of a game they played and if this were true they would be swayed by any violent or 12+ movie they watch, people are not that naive.

Galaxy 'Chauffeur' advert: blog tasks

Galaxy-Audrey Hepburn ad

1) Audrey Hepburn was a British actress, model, dancer and humanitarian. Recognised as a film and fashion icon, Hepburn was active during Hollywood's Golden Age. She died 20th January 1993

2) The reason they chose Hepburn for this ad is because it ads a sense of nostalgia as this is what they want their consumers to feel when they eat this chocolate. This is because it feels good to reminisce and they want you to have that same feeling when eating their chocolate.

3) The connotations of Hepburn in this ad are that not only was she a famous actress she was also a fashion icon that many people, men, women and children, looked up to. This allows people to remember a great idol that once lived and again brings them nostalgia.

4) The reason this ad was set in the 50s is because it supposed to be based mainly around a movie she once made called 'roman holiday' This is the reason it is also set in the luxurious Italian riviera which creates intertextuality and nostalgia-2 key audience pleasures. The man who drives her away in the car looks almost exactly alike to her co-star Gregory Peck. Along with the background song 'moon river' by Audrey Hepburn this all creates a sense of familiarity to older audiences. This brings us back to the reoccurring theme of nostalgia.

5) Intertextuality is the shaping of a text's meaning by another text. It is the interconnection between similar or related works of literature that reflect and influence an audience's interpretation of the text.

6) The Audrey Hepburn film suggested in this advert is 'Roman Holiday'. This is done by setting the ad in Italy and using an actor who looks similar to her co-star Gregory Peck. Another way this is done is that they used the same model of bus in both the movie and the ad. The also aloud the actors costumes that are very 50sesque which is around the time this movie was created.

7) The hero is Hepburn, the villain is the motorcycle who dropped all the fruit at the beginning, the donor is the bus driver who gave her his hat, the heroine is the driver of the car she gets into afterward and finally the reward is the galaxy chocolate.

8) The equilibrium is when the bus is moving alright with no traffic. The disequilibrium is when the motorbike knocks over the fruit stand. Finally the new equilibrium is when Hepburn gets into another mans car and drives away.

9) In this ad women are first represented as useless and in need of help but as the ad goes on it turns out that the men are the ones in need of help and the woman, in turn, is the one who gives the help needed.

10) I believe that at the beginning it seems as though stereotypes are being reinforced, however it actually turns out that they are being subverted. For example when Hepburn seems helpless when the bus is stuck and a man comes to help her; when Hepburn saves the man by giving him the hat and allowing him to drive with her.
