Audience power essay - feedback and learner response

1)
WWW: This is seriously impressive – pushing 950 words, a well-developed argument showing plenty of originality and opinion plus a good selection of examples. It’s particularly impressive that you’re arguing that audiences have not been empowered as much as many people believe – and that the power still lies with the major media companies.

EBI: It’s definitely worth looking at how you’re structuring essays and paragraphs. You start with a very firm view regarding audiences NOT having much more power… but then most of the following paragraphs have topic sentences that contradict this. It’s completely acceptable to have changed your viewpoint by the end of an essay (arguably it’s a great sign of the academic journey of the essay!) but you don’t want to confuse your reader along the way.

Alongside this, I think you’ve covered the media debates very impressively but you don’t always stay focused on the question which is crucial when writing an essay. The question is regarding audience power but if you re-read your paragraphs you don’t always bring things back to power. One trick is to try and use the key words from the question (audience, power, internet) at the beginning and end of every paragraph.

LR: See tasks on blog.

2)  947 words

3) I believe that my 2nd to last paragraph is my best 1 as it is the only one i do not believe i strayed from the topic

4) my weakest paragraph is my 2nd paragraph as it is entirely not about the question

5) The Internet has changed the music industry a lot and the consumer has benefited from this. Some advantages of the internet for the consumer are: You Tube where you can listen to and watch music videos, streaming which can be done on various websites and apps, bands/artist can now be discovered online and successful artists are chosen by audiences so anyone can become famous, it is now cheaper and much more accessible. This allows the audience to control what other consumers watch/ listen to and persuade the way the internet changes. Apps like Sound Cloud and Spotify are new ways that are free for users to listen to their favourite artists and idols through. This is also a way for 'Bedroom Bands' to be seen by record labels and get their music out into the world as you can post your own music as well. Another way for artists to be discovered is on You Tube where you can post covers of your favourite music but also create your own music. This helps the consumer to change the music industry even more in a way that they can be an influence.

Reception Theory

1)The preferred reading is what the producer is trying to make the audience see.

2)The oppositional reading is what the audience may see that goes against the preferred reading.

3)The producer tries to perceive teenagers as aggressive and reckless in the Harry Brown movie.

4)Young people might reject this because it is only showing the negative things that a small amount of teens are like.

5)The preferred reading for the MacDonald advert is that this burger is filled with organic delicious ingredients and that is very healthy. However, the oppositional reading is that this burger is very unhealthy and disgusting as it is not the way that it is described and is actually much smaller. The negotiated reading is that although that burger is unhealthy and not the way it is described, it's still a guilty pleasure and people will still eat it no matter how bad it is for you. MacDonald's wish for people to see this burger as a healthier meal but if you look deeper you find out that they may be eating anything as their 'special sauce' ingredients are still very much a secret. Some may argue that this burger is healthy still.

6)This is a Lucozade advertisement. The preferred reading for this is that Lucozade is full of nutrients and perfect for a workout or to get your stamina up. However the oppositional reading is that there is enough sugar in this drink to last you a week according to the amount of sugar cubes each person should have each day. The negotiated reading of this is that even though there is way too much sugar in it, this drink is perfectly suitable for the gym and is a great accessory for a workout. some believe that this drink is the perfect thing to keep you energy up for a run.

Audience power essay (947 words)

Audience power essay

“The internet has given audiences much more power than ever before.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?

I do not believe that audiences have been given much more power than they used to have, as there is still not much they can do in terms of media. However, audiences have been given some power over the media with the creation of Prosumers and social media outlets that we can post anything on. Although audiences have some power, big media companies still have the majority of influence over media. In this essay I will explore the changes and influences of media in the present day.

The Internet has changed the music industry a lot and the consumer has benefited from this. Some advantages of the internet for the consumer are: You Tube where you can listen to and watch music videos, streaming which can be done on various websites and apps, bands/artist can now be discovered online and successful artists are chosen by audiences so anyone can become famous, it is now cheaper and much more accessible.

The disadvantages of this are huge for both the consumer and producer. Even though music is more accessible and cheaper now a days artists are getting less money. This is a result of the consumer only listening to music on apps and sites like Spotify and You Tube; by doing this the producer gets less and less money. If this carries on eventually all your favourite artists will make less quality music, possibly be forced to stop making music all together. From 2013 to 2014 music sales in the U.S. dropped by 5% and even more for the years after this.

Another industry that has had a huge increase in audience power is the film and TV industry. An advantage of this is that it is much more accessible. With more sites to stream from like Netflix and Show Box People are having to pay less and less for cinemas and theatres.  Another option would be illegal download; sites like 123 Movies and Cartoon HD anyone can watch movies and series that have just come out whenever they please. Netflix and Amazon Prime are amazing examples of sites you can subscribe to and watch movies and programmes as soon as they come out but also do their own original series. This allows people more variety for their watching pleasures.

There are many disadvantages of this as well. Binge watching can take up a lot of time but is now encouraged with the amount of series on these sites. Before you know it you have stayed awake for days at a time to watch a series like Breaking Bad and ignored your work that has been piling up. Another disadvantage is that staring for too long at a small or really close screen can greatly affect your eyesight for the worse and harm your retinas. Finally companies have been producing less interesting products and reboot a lot of material as all these 'Free sites' have been decreasing sales and disallowing companies from making money. This has an affect as it means they are forced to either stop making content or make content with less quality that is less interesting.

The final industry that has changed greatly in terms of audience power is the news. There are many advantages for this. Firstly, anyone can now be the most important journalist in the world. This is because with the creation of sites like Twitter you can tell the world what you saw or what has happened as soon as it happens. Also you can video an event or issue that is happening and broadcast it live. This is called Citizen Journalism. Secondly news is now a lot cheaper to access and you don't have to pay for a paper as any news in the paper is re-created on a website as well. Big news companies like The Sun now have to sell their papers for free.
However, there are many disadvantages to this. No one will ever truly know whether what they are reading is fake news or not. An example of this is when some teenagers in Latvia made up fake news about a black actor supposedly supporting trump. This was entirely untrue but caused a huge rise in trump votes and a huge increase in their bank accounts. A final disadvantage is that even though people have more power big companies have the most power as they choose who is listened to and who's opinions are respected. An example of this is a journalist, Tim Poole, was ignored for most of his journalism career on Twitter but people finally started to respect him when the company decided to put a blue tick against his profile. This is a sign of verification.

In conclusion I came into this essay believing that all audiences had much more power, however after some well deserved research I now have the understanding that big companies still have the majority of all influences on media. Finally, audiences may still have some power but what they decide to do with it may decide they fate of many artists and actors’ careers and lives. Even though audiences have influence over the media, it will never compare to the immense power and influence big companies and producers have.

Audience theory

Audience theory

Passive Audience - A passive audience is an audience that just observes an event rather than actively responding it.

Active audience - Active audience theory argues that media audiences do not just receive information passively but

are actively involved, often unconsciously, in making sense of the message within their personal and social contexts.

Hypodermic needle theory
The hypodermic needle model is a model of communications suggesting that an intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver. people believed in the 1920s that all media would be taken as truth and that people were ignorant enough to believe it and the media was powerful enough to use it.

Information/Surveillance - Blue planet because it gives a wide range of information about the ocean.

Identity - Harrow: A Very British School because it is about a school in harrow and how the students lives are and it is something many teens can relate to in Britain.

Diversion/Entertainment - Stranger things because it is a show that is completely different from our normal lives and can be used as an escape.

Relationships - Sherlock because it allows you to connect with the characters and almost share a bond so that you watch more.

Nostalgia - Only fools and horses because it is an old tv show that people of an older age may watch now to remember their younger lives.

Blue Planet analysis

David Attenborough uses a wide range of posh and sophisticated sounding language to draw in an audience who wants to know more about the ocean. This relates to Information and Surveillance. His voice is one that is soothing and calm, along with the variety of cool blues and exotic colours this helps to relax an audience who needs diversion or entertainment. The reason many people keep watching Blue Planet is because they like David Attenborough  an build a bond with him. This relates to Relationships. Finally, some people may watch this because they live or work on the sea and want more information on what they are dealing with This is for Identity.

October Assessment- LR and feedback

WWW-a very solid start, clear understanding of the terminology.

EBI-you missed a crucial question! Must avoid errors like this. You need to stay sharply focused on the longer Q's

Total-16 Grade-4

LR
marks received per question
Q1.)1
Q2.)1
Q3.)2
Q4.)2
Q5.)1   I did not get full marks because I only gave 1 reason.
Q6.)3
Q7.)2
Q8.)0   I did not answer this question.
Q9.)4  I did not get full marks because I did not answer with enough points and it was not very clear.

Strongest and weakest questions

My strongest question was question 6 -because it was a basic denotation question - which I am rather good at - I found it easy to identify why its was a film poster.

My weakest question was question 9 because it was a harder question - where we had to identify why producers use kids - but i am not very good at looking for deeper meanings.

Question 9 re-draft
The producer uses children in charity advertisement because it makes the consumer empathetic. If you look at the picture in figure 3 it is just a small child in a hot looking area; however, the connotations are that: the child is malnourished as you can see his collarbone, he is tired as his eyes are droopy and his brows are furrowed. Charities generally use emotive images to boost their charity. Children are associated with innocence and vulnerability which is why they intrigue peoples generosity.
Children give people the need to protect so this appeals most to parents and attracts their motherly and fatherly instincts as the target audience. The image is quickly recognisable as it is of a familiar place with a well known cause- lack of clean water.  A stereotypical image is used so that the target audience will recognise the stereotype  and donate money to help the cause.

Camera work and editing: Minority Report analysis

                             Shot 1

The medium close up angle allows all of the characters to stay in the shot. This shows enough of the face for you to tell the emotion but also shows the background filled with people although not exactly showing where they are. The way they are dressed shows that they are police men even though they look more futuristic.
                                        Shot 2
This wide shot sows where the next event will take place. This shows an alleyway with a car as the background. This doesn't show a body or a face so you cannot actually tell what the emotion is, however judging from the background it looks drowsy dull and sad.

Shot 3

This close up shot shows mainly the face so the emotions are visible in his expression. There is barely any background so it is fairly hard to see where he is however there is a lot of shadow and the lighting is dark so we can assume that it is nighttime where he is.

During this video the pace of the editing starts off slow to build and then gradually gets faster when the action starts. The effect this creates is it intrigues the audience as it goes fast and they have to pay extra attention to see all the details of the action.

wizards of waverly place analysis

wizards_of_waverly_place
1)medium close up at 0:12
This medium close up clearly shows Alex shouting at Harper. This allows the audience to read the emotions clearly on her face but also show the background and where she is.

2)long shot at 2:19
This long shot shows Harper and Justin dancing onto the screen. This allows you to see both actors whole body as well as the blurry background.

3)medium shot at 1:04
This medium shot shows Alex rolling her eyes while talking to Harper. This allows both actors to be in the shot and the background.

4)high angle at 3:52
This high angle shows Justin lying hurt on the ground after being beaten up by Max. This particular shot shows Justin's whole body but makes him seem small and frail.

5)low angle at 4:06
This low angle shows Max taunting and making fun of Justin. This particular shot only shows her waist up and makes her look more powerful than Justin as she just beat him up.

6)At the beginning the camera panned in from the left to the right following Harper's movements. Next  the camera zoomed out to allow you to see more of the background when max enters. when Alex gets angry the camera pans from right to left following her movements and later when they introduce the karate sensei it zooms out to allow you to see both max and Justin.

photo story board

Establishing shot
This is the photo of the school. Known as the Establishing shot, which is used to show where the event is about to take place. This tells you that the event that is about to take place will be in or around the school building.
Close up
This photo is of Jayden and Karan. Known as the close up, close in on aspect of a character (usually a characters face.) This allows the audience to see emotions and reactions.  This tells you that Jayden and Karan are angry.
Over the shoulder
This photo is of Jayden over Karan's shoulder. Known as an over the shoulder shot, looking from behind a person at a subject. Used for conversation, or in this case an argument, between people or to show a characters point of view.
High angle
This is a photo of Jayden punching Karan in the face. Known as a high angle, it is used to make people seem small. In this case we used this angle to make Karan seem smaller than Jayden as he is the one being punched.
Unusual perspective
This photo is of Jayden and Karan's fight from a birds-eye view. Known as an unusual perspective, this can be used to surprise an audience or show danger. In this case we used this angle to give a different perspective of the fight and to see the bystanders watching.
Low angle
This photo is of Karan punching Jayden. Known as a low angle, this is used to make the subject look big and powerful. In this case we used this angle to make Karan look bigger and more powerful than Jayden as he is the one punching him
Medium close up
This is a photo of Billy as our 'teacher'. Known as the medium close up, only the head and shoulders are visible so the facial expression (emotion) can be seen along with background often used with over-the-shoulder shots. In this case we used it to make Billy seem angry, annoyed and bored at the same time.
Big close up
This is a photo of Billy's eye. Known as a big close up, shows extreme detail and emphasises whatever is seen in the shot. Used rarely by directors to make sure it has a strong effect. In this case we used this shot to make it known that Billy has seen the fight.
Long shot
This photo is of Billy moving toward the fight. Known as the long shot, the head to toe is visible. It shows plenty of background and fits in plenty of action. In this case we used it to show that he is moving toward the action.
Medium shot
This photo is of Billy attempting to break up the fight. Known as the medium shot, the waist to head is visible. The actor and the setting are roughly equal in the frame. it is often used with a '2 shot' (2 actors in shot together.) In this case we used this so that we were able to fit all 3 people in the shot.

blog feedback and LR

WWW: Overall, this is a very good start in Media! Your film poster analysis in particular offers depth and knowledge/research of the film studios behind Alien. More like this please!

EBI: Two issues I want to pick up. Firstly, written English. You need to make sure you are writing accurately in every piece of work you produce. In your blog so far, you’re missing capital letters for titles in places – that’s not good enough! Secondly, your denotation and connotation tasks don’t have the depth that your film poster analysis offers. If we are going to be aiming for those 7-9 grades, you need to explore texts from a variety of angles and offer real depth and detail to your written analysis. Compare this analysis to your WaterAid/Mr Kipling work: http://ishachana2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/denotation-and-connotation.html

LR: Reflect on your first month of Media. What do you feel is your strongest piece of work so far? What is your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course? How can you improve the depth and detail of your media analysis?

Response
My strongest piece of work so far is my Alien poster analysis because I believe that I went into a lot of detail in the analysis of the industry and what the poster means in depth.
I believe my weakest piece of work so far is my Mr Kipling analysis because I didn't go into enough detail nor did I think a lot about it. Specific skills or knowledge I need to develop are for Denotations, Connotations and learning how to properly analyse colours.
I think I could improve by practising Denotation and  Connotation until I can do it properly.
